A law has been passed in Pennsylvania which enlarges the powers of - married women in acquiring and dis- - posing of property . Nineteen States b have created commissions to.Uct to--1 gether in framing a uniform marriage t code for all the States. The necessity 3 for this is often exemplified. A 1 in point occurred last' summer, when • a Philadelphian went to Ohio,, and ) obtained a divorce, his wife i still a resident of Philadelphia. ]$£> I turning he married a Philadejphian i widow. Subsequently the*lirst wifo ' denied the legality of the decree of I divorce on the ground that she had . received no notice of proceedings, '. The Ohio Courts did not support hejj contention, and the divorce was maintained. The first wife appealed in the Pennsylvania courts for support from her " husband" The Pennsylvania Court did not regard the Ohio divorce as valid in Pennsylvania 1 ) and ordered the "husband to pay five dollars a week for the support of his wife." Thus the man found him. self possessed, of two legal wives, whom he was bound to support, and . with whom he was entitled to live. The judge gave as his opinion that he could not be prosecuted for bigamy in Pennsylvania, as the deed was not committed in that State; and could not in Ohio, as there the marriage was legal, as the divorce was granted there, and that it is possible! for a man to have divorced wives in'various States that are only considered legal in those Statos, and yet uot be lreble for polygamy.
