ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDER.

A case of attempted wife murder of a very brutal character, followed by the suicide of the perpetrator, occurred near Albury, New South Wales, on the l(ki ult. A man named John Poppleton returned to his home at II o'clock and demanded dinner His wife remonstrated with him, and said that she was too busy to" provide dinner so early. Pappleton then went out, and returned'brandishing an axe. Ho said," It's now a case of one | killing the other. If you don't kill me, j I will kill you." Ho offered her the axe,| but she refused to take it, thinking that j he was only jesting. Her husband then swung the axe round, striking his wife on the right side of the head, and cutting her skull open for three inches, She immediately became /unconscious, and' was removed to the Hospital, where, when she recovered consciousness, her dying depositions were takeii by the Magistrate. Later in the afternoonthe body of Poppleton was found in the water. Life had been extinct for some hours. It is believed that- Poppleton, believing that his wife was dead, went immediately and drowned himself. . Deceased had been out of work for three months, and his making no offort to obtain employment was resented by his wife, and led to domestic differences. They had several children, who wore in the habit of soliciting alms.
