MINING NEWS

Aliumia.-A parcel of 401bs of picked stone was obtained yesterday when breaking down the hangingwall branch of Dixon's reef in the fifth sfcope going eastward.

HAZEBiUNK.-The manager (Mr Coutts) reports as follows: "There is little change in the western drive on Darby's at the No 2 intermediate level. The lead is 8 inches thick, and contains a considerable quantity of mineral, and although no gold has been seen, the quartz still continues to look promising. In the leading stopeover this drive the lead is split up, but gold has been freely seen in the quartz and a few pounds of picked stone was obtained from here on Thursday last. The leading stope eastward of the winze at the above named level is being pushed ahead with all possible speed. There is about 15 inches of crushing dirt in the face, and although no gold has been seen here this week the quartz is carrying excellent mineral indications and in ray opinion picked stone may be! met with at any time. In the drive on this lead at No 1 level there is a slight! improvement in the quarta coming to I hand, it contains a good deal of soft] silica amongst which gold ie seen. The loading stopeover the back of this drive! is being pushed forward; 40 pounds of i picked stone have been obtained from here during the last 3 days, gold being also freely, seen distribnted.jjhroup'h the general dirt The lead still looks encouraging going upwards. In the, second sfcope the lead has been from 10 to 15 inches in thickness, the quartz being of a rusty nature rnakos it difficult to see gold, still a few colours have been seen in breaking , it. There is nothing fresh to report from the stope on the cross, reef above the No. 2 intermediate. The quartz looks promising bud no gold has been seen here this week. A crushing of 64 loads of j quartz and the picked stone has been completed to-day for, I am pleased to say, the payable return of 1520z 17dwts melted gold. ,
