Saturday was the opening day of tho practico matches for tho selection of tho team to do battle with Auckland in tho annual match, fixed this year for tho 19th prox.

Both the "A" and "B" teams.wero several men short, and consequently play was of rather a desultory kind. Tries wero secured for tho" B" team by Hawk, Mullins, Stowart 2, ono of which tho latter converted. The "As" failed to score, though they several times compelled their opponents to save, nnd the game thus ended in favour of the •' B" team by 11 points to nil. J. Agnew acted as referee. Messrs Buchan, Daro, O'Brien met after tho match and selected the following teams for noxt Saturday's practice. Probables : Full-back, Koafood; threequarters, R. McMcGrogor, W. McGregor, Bestic; halves, J. McGregor, Coote, and R. Stewart; forwards, Stowart, Mullins, Brownlee, Twohill, Downs, Woods, McMahon, and Billing

Tho spectators deserted tho senior con* test to watch tho abovo match, which proved far moro interesting.
