Imperal federation was advocated by some, while othara dieoußfled tbe idea of Canadian iodepend* enoe and of annexation to (ho United States, Moreover, the developament of the French nationality had been mooted, Although the suggestion of annexation to the United Statee rarely found expression in Canada, yet the attractions of tbe 'great country to the soathof the Dominion were very apparent, There were people in England, too, who would doabtleee be pleased to see Canada become part of tbe United States in order that no danger might arise which might' interfere with the British capital invested in the State. His proposal would not restrict Canadian independence or create an irksome bond. It wonld assure to her a greater measure of independence than she enjoyed at preeoot, and would give the Dominion the meane ef exposing the public opinion of her citizens in the" Imperial House of Com* mons upon Canadian interests, Mr Ceott beld that reciprecal trade arrangemontg with the United Statee would be better for Canada's matorial welfare than Imperial federation. Mr. Abbott, the leader of ths Senate, pronounced Mr Boultoo's proposal to bo not only impraotioable, bat onponstitutinnal and at his suggestion the motion was with* drawn.
