THE Thames Advertiser. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6 1889.

Prolessor Baldwin left Aackland fo Sydney yesterday. We would direct the attention of the police to the practice of a number of boys who are in the habit of bathing in the mill pond at the Shortland Mill, much to the disgust of pedestrians. Wo are informed that 'he recent fire in the Waipahaka bush, has done considerable damage: About 80 loses in Lynche's Creek were severely scorchsd, A number of logs, not measured, sustained Berions damage by the fire. The green standing timber at Marototo, has been over-run by a fire, but the damage done will be insignificant if steps are taken to out down and uti ,: se.the timber in time. We are glad to notice that the Harbour Board has determined to act on the suggestion of the Harbour Master to have another light erected over the goods shed on the wharf. . On a dark night there caube no questioihbut that as matters stand there is considerable lisk of an acoident. Steamers arrive and depart at all hours ot the night, so" that the Thames wharf requires to be belter lighted than are others, whereas hitherto it would be difficult to find another on which the comfort and safely of the public in this respect has been so little considered. We are glad to report that Mr Tetloy is little the worse for his involuntary immersion and narrow escape last night. Wo remind those interested that Messrs Fleming & Co., will hold their ustnl weekly sale to-day. In addition to the caHie and sheep usually offered, a number of dairy cows will be submitted for competition, We are informed that <"'ie latter are of specially good quality and worthy tha attention 'of anybody in want of Mich animals. It will be seen by an announcement in anothor column that Mr E. Purchas proposes practising his profession as a Barrister and Solicitor. He has taksn offices over Mr Marshall's Drapery Store, Albert Street, It is hardly necessary to remind those of the Thames public who are lovers of good musio that the Concert tendered to Mr Santley Clampett takes place thip evening, That gentlemm will be assisted by many of the leading amateurs ef the Thames, Tlic second part will consist of sacred selections a class of music which A'r Clamper's training renders him particularly fitted to 1 illusu-ato, Mr 11, Small will accompany on his grand orchestral organ which lie has kindly lout lor the occasion. The pro giamme will be found in another column.

Tho R.M.S Zcalandia'arrived from Sau Praneippo last night at 9 o'clock, Her dates.art—London, December 26th, and Sau Francisco January l,sth. In another column will be round a summary of news, Iter latest Samoan date is January 23rd, so that her iiowß has been anticipated by that by the Wainui. Tho length of (lie summary lias compollud us to boll} oyer our fouding rticlo and other matter

No definite news Ims readied us iu refer ence to the boat race It is to bo hoped that it will not be allowed to fall through , We announced in our yesterday's ifsucthat the Premier would visit the Thames before departing South, a telegram received yesterday intimates that Sir H, Atkinson will proprjpibly reach the Ihamcs on Monday next. There are many public matters that call for notice at. his hands, and it would be well that those cqnuectcd with our local public bodies should arrange- what matters it will ho well to bring- under his notice, and be prepared with facts and doiuments in sup port of any requests they may deem it necessary to make, so that there may be no loss of time.
