A unique account is given in the Han Francisco Bulletin, and no doubt in othflf American papers as well, of the reoenb earthquake in Canterbury. A very precious telegram, evidently Beat by a thorough geographer, stated that an earthquake had. visited iNew Zealand. Five heavy, shocks \yoreJfelt in one day. Christqhurch Oanhedral Auckland, was totally destroyed, and many other buildings demolished. The inhabitants rushed from their houses for safety, buk subsequently returned; "Happily no lives were lost, A later telegram stated that the earthquake was not so destructive as first stated, Clnjistchurch Cathedral, Auckland, waß only partly destroyed^ v; Now'these nra tho sort of" yarns" to bring this country to the fore as a centra lor emigration.
