Gaoler O'Brien, of Lyttelton, having been disrated and ordered to Hokitika in consequenee of the escape of Jonathan Roberts, and Chief Warder Bell, who was in charge at Ripa Island, having been reduced to the rank of warder, comiderable indignation has boon aroused in Lyttelton. A petition asking for O'Brien's retention is being signed, and an indignation meeting is spoken of. O'Brien suggested that Roberta should not bB sent to Ripa Island, but kept at work in the gaol, but tho suggestion was not adopted. Nothing was adduced to show tho cause of the firo, and an open verdict was returned. A PROBATION CASE.. To-day James Buckley sentenced to three years' probation, and to pay £10 expenses on April 9th for tho larceny of a cheque, was brought before Justice Ward in Banco charged" with not having reported himself to the police or paid uny of the money. He pleaded that he had beon looking for work. Mr, Martin, Crown Solicitor, offered to give him work for a few days. Tho Judge ordered him to begin his probation from date. This is the first case of this kind that has happened in the colony. BREAKWATER TOWER.
