CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD THE GOVERNMENT.
[Pbb Press Association.]' ■ ,:■,,; GHRiSTCHtJBOH, Thursday. , 'At the /-Lyttejton' B.M.' Court- to-day, eleven employes in.the Railway'.-Depart-ment,'at,' that' place,, were; charged; with cpnepiring to defraud the Government. The principal, it is alleged, is John Hough, who was timekeepei, and had to keep an' account of. the work done by the; other man. ■■ The theory for the prosecution is I that , by a miitual arrangement between the timekeeper and the labourers,the!latter were given credit and received payment for work they had not. performed, but which Hqugh certified they had done; In hisopening remarks Mr Joynt, who prosecuted, aajd •' that Hough; had signed' and writ'teri.a'.confession course, could only implicate:himself) that he was ; in complicity with other men whose names he did not. mention. '.'. The case against Hough and an.empjoyenamed Wm. Percival was first taken, and after the evidence had '.been taken both persons were committed for trial,,' The Bench' refused bail to Hough till the cases against the other men were investigated,, The Government have probably been defrauded of some hundreds of pounds. ;■;',', ; : ; '.;';;
