Auckland, Saturday. An inquiry will be held into the recent fire at the Lyceum Building in Hobsonslreet, as the circumstances connected with the outbreak were of a suspicious character, The inquiry is expected to be a lengthy one. Detective Twohey is employed in working up the evidence.
The man Atkinson, who was concerned in the Macßae troubles at Mangare, was committed to the Whau Lunatic Asylum to-day.
The session of the Congregational Union of New Zealand was wound up by a harbour excursion given to the members of the Union,
Joseph Banks, manager of the Frozen Meat Co., has had an interview with Dr Hector, relative to fish preserving projects. Dr Hector recommends that attention .be given principally to kawhai and sohnapper. Mr 0. Reynell, of Parnell, is suffering from a katipo bite. I
A fire broke out in Chancery Lane at one this morning, and destroyed a dilapidated empty building. The Free Library had a narrow escape.

] Wellington, Saturday.' Mr Ballance does not favour the proposal to send any men from New Zealand to; the Soudan. The question has not, however, been considered in the Cabinet, but it is not at all probable that any offers will be accepted; should it be decided to send a contingent the Government would itself made a careful selection of both men and officers. ■

Sunday. The native owners of the land on both sides of the Central Railway line from Te Awomutu to Marton have now given their consent to the construction of the Northern Main Trunk Railway, and appear very enthusiastic about the.matter. Tenders are invited for the first section at each end, the northern' section being 15 miles, and the southern 12^-miles.
. Christchurch, Saturday. The E Battery of Artillery will be represented at the Rifle Association meeting in Wellington by six men. The Spanish Vice-Consul's appeal on behalf of the sufferersby tha earthquake in Andalusia has met with a liberal response. ■ It is proposed to hold a fete to raise funds. • '
Half-a-dozen young men left to-day by the Hauroto, to endeavour to join .the Sydney contingent for the Soudan.
GoiiLiNQWOOD, Saturday, This morning the Hon. Mr Laroach, Minister of Mines, arrived here from Nelson, in order to see the mineral de-. posits of the district, To-day he has inspected the hematite deposit at Parapara, and the patent works • there, and has visited two or three gold mining claims, including the Gledyl. He is not likely to leave the district before Tuesday.
