MINING MATTERS.
.igi Southern Cross.—The crushing for this company was completed on Saturday, and as was anticipated, gave a splendid result! The twenty-two loads of quartz crushed yielded 123 ounces of retorted gold. The richest portion of the parcel was obtained from tho stopes on thehangingwall branch of tho specimen leader above the first level entered from No. 1 winze. The block here is well-nigh exhausted, being limited by the surface soil, but tliere is reason to believe an equally auriferous section can bo acquired by commencing another drive on the leader at the noxt level, "which has till now remained intact. In driving the present level tho leader looked splendid at the bottom of the drive, so that it is quite possible tho gold will continue so far as the lower iovol. Tho manager intends to make a start this morning to remove the mullock lodged in the winze, in order to proceed with expedition with the drivo.at tl» next level. Tho quartz from the Workings on tho loaders worked in the 'surface' level yielded about 15dwts per load, iresuit which is encouraging considering the.; size of tho lodes. :r Hape Creek.-Wilson and party, tributera in this mine, lodged 21ozs sdwts in tho bank on Saturday afternoop. A crushing for McCollum and party yielded loz 16dwts gold. Moanataiari.—Nolan and party, tributers, have completed a crushing for the yield of 3ozs 15dwts gold. Caledonian.—The stopes upon N6.1 lodo in tho vicinity of tho Otago boundary are producing'good grado crushing dirt, and parcels of picked stone como to hand daily. Nothing further has transpired in connection with the ' strong lode in tho footwall of the riso on No. 2 reef. The men havo been engaged in stripping the mullock from tho wall of the reef, but the country is so tight as to greatly imped 6 progress. Tho manager sent down a quantity of quartz to tho Horald battery on Saturday, and will probably commonco crushing early this morning.
