The town is filled with visitors from other colonies and the country for the races. The attendance at Eleminglon exceeded former years. The arrange, ments on the course were' improved, Nothing now can be more complete. The weather was fine both on the Derby and Cup days. Both races were in the nature of a surprise. Snwarrow's victory in the Derby was as good for bookmakers as Darriwell's winning the Cup. Caspian and Nellie carried off the Derby money, while Secundus, Savanaka, H iverton, Suwarrow, Sweetmeat, and Wellington wero the principal Cup favourites. Sweetmeat ran 2nd for the fastest time yet recorded —3mins 30|secs, and Suwarrow 3rd, so the public confidence was not far misplaced, but Savanaka was nowhere. Suwarrow led from the start, and was in front for a mile and three-quarters when overhauled by Darriwell and Sweetmeat. It was a very pretty field, and had time been a couple of minutes slower, a number of horsea would have been in the race. It is slated the attendance yesterday was little short of 100,000. Ladies dressaes were not quite so extensive as usual, but in good taste. On Monday three persons were arrested for gambling with the totalisators; on one of the persons the sum of £1000 was seized. There has been an unusual amount of gambling in the shape of Bweepa on the race 3. and one person alone has handled nearly £20,000. A plant collector from Balmoral Gardens, will proceed in the Wolverine on a oruise on the South Seas. J. 8. Batters, late lessee of the "Victorian Club, is insolvent, with debts over £5,200. Pir Samuel William's Erolound sheep realised £7757.
