POLICE COURT.—Yesterday.

Assault.—John Vercoe was charged with unlawfully assultine one William McLaughlin (a lad).—Defendant pleaded guilty, and said that he had struck the lad because ho called him "a liar and a blood-thirsty b—."-Complainant deposed that on the day in question he was going up the Hape Tramway in company with a friend when he met Vercoe. His companion ask<»d Vercoe whetberhehadhis six-chambered revolver on him. to which defendant replied that he would shoot his (witness's) dog as he said that it had attacked his cattle. Witness advised him not to commit himself, whereupon Vercoe threatened to shoot both witness and his dog. Witness called'him a blood-thirsty raacal, for saying this Vercoo caught hold of him and struck him several times on the back. Thomas McCallom, who was present when the assault was committed, also gave evidence. The Bench held the assault proved, and fined defendant Is and
