It is a curious fact that Tea was one principal cause of the separation of America from England. The Prime Minister of England proposed to tax the American Colonists in order to maintain the military posts and defray the cost of Government. Magna Charta enacts thai no English subsect shall be taxed without his consent. None of the American colonists had seats in Parliament and if taxed they must be so without their own consent In 1774 a large quantity of taxed tea was sent to America by the East India Company, The colonists formed plans for frustrating the tax. They foresaw if they paid this quietly they would be open to others. A band of Bostonians, disguised as Mohawk Indians, boarded the English tea ships, took possession of the cargoes,, and threw about £18,000 worth into the sea. As the result the Eng- ■ lish Government was furious, and the colonists were determined to war for their rights; hence rose the celebrated DECLARATION OF EIGHTS, Calling upon the English to abolish the obnoxious taxes. This demand was refused; hence the war and the proclamation of independence* There are four harvests of tea in the year. Namely, in April, May, June, and August.
