In to-day's Gazette it is notified that, in the terms of a resolution of the flouso of Eepresentativos, the Government will give a bonus of five thousand pounds for the first produco of not less than five hundred tons of marketable sugar from beet-root grown in the North Island, and a like sum for the same quantity made in the Middle Island. Wanganui, Friday. Henry Fisher and Walter Ooker, storekeepers at Palmerston North, were charged with conspiring to defraud their creditors. They were tried at the Supreme Court. Tho case lasted two days. The jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts. Sentence deferred till Saturday. Oamartj, Friday. James Dunn's bouse iu Ure-street was destroyed by fire. Mrs Dunn and two children had a narrow escape of losing their lives. Tho building and furniture were insured for £4C3 in tho South British. The fireis supposed to havo originated in the kitebjen. The Oamaru and Naseby flailway Committee have deoidod to urge upon the Government to extend the Waireka railway as far as the township of Livingstone. They also said they intended to try and form a company for constructing a lino from Duntroon to Kourou, with a view of tapping the interior portion of I North Otago.

At tho Police Court to-day, Alexander H. Logan, son of John Logan, J.P., brother-in-law of Mr Stout, AttorneyGeneral, was charged by J. G. 3. Grant with an assault over the horsewhipping caBO on Easter Monday. Tho Magistrate said if he did abstract justice he •would dismiss the complaint, but in, tho administration of tho law ho would fine him ono shilling and costs.
