A very dreadful mining accident occurred yesterday morning, about 1 o'clock, in the No. 5 level of the No. 1 shaft of the Pleasant Creok Cross Beef Company, by which a man employed in the mine, named George Cross, was, it is feared, mortally injured. It appears that Cross and his mate were making preparations for timbering, when a piece of the mullock about two tons weight fell, nearly covering Cross, and severing one of his legs almost completely from his body, besidss breaking fcho other. Cross was engaged testing the mullock above him when it fell. Ho had tested the roof previously, and expressed himself quite satisfied, but owing to a small piece falling, had come up on the stage a second time, and while there, without any warning whatever, the roof came in. No blame seems to be attached to anyone, but the roof of the drive has always been recognised as rotten and treacherous. The injured man was taken to the hospital, where amputation was resorted to. Latest advices are to the effect that the unfortunate man was rapidly sinking. Brisbane, April 6. The steamer 'Thales' has arrived at Oooktown from Hong Kong, with 950 Chinese for Cooktown.
