MINING MATTERS.

Puko.—The mine is being, worked vigorously, and as many men are employed as can conveniently be placed on No. 2 reef, both sides of the shaft. To the Queen of Beauty side the reef is 8 feet wide in the face; towards tho sea it is 18 feet, and continues to show the same good characteristics as noted yesterday. ' MoANATAiABi.-Yesterday the blast in the roof of the specimen run brought down4cwt of choice golden stones, and left a show behind, but it is manifest that the specimens are pinching out. The face of the reef in the drive is about; three feet wide, showing good'stone, but of a lower character than formerly.-'To the west the size is fully five feet, and supplies large quantities of payable stone, as" well as'thV length of the stope between the two flees, the latter being best. It is probable that another run of gold maybe met with in driving towards the slide, while under foot it is known to exist. Sinking the winze on Heldt's lode progresses, and it is now down about 75 feet, but owipg to its underlie it will have to be continued considerably deeper. This winze, .when deep enough, will answer two purposes— that of ventilating, and affording means for stoping both'reefiS. The - shaft,is still going down in goon oauntry,*and tho contractors are making good progress. Aibubnia. — The company have finished their crushing of 65 tons at the Moanataiari battery for the'good return of 3860zs retorted gold, which melted to 3730z9 17dwts. The tonnage has been obtained from both sides of the slide, apd Mr S. Gribble has now in hand a block of ground that promisee to pay woll. It is found: that: on rising upon the specimen leader (which varies in size from 2 to 8 inches) towards the surface, that the slide is Much flatter, and still receding, thus giving more length of drive as they ascend in working it out.

Qoeen of the May.—ln breaking down from the second stope of the footwall leader of the reof yesterday a choice lot of specimens was obtained weighing about 501bs or 601bs.

'■■ Cbown PaiNCKS9.—The manager, Mr Dawson, has started taking out quartz from No, 2 reef, No. 2 level, upwards, where there is a considerable block to stope out, and also from the specimen lode from No. 3 level upwards. The lodes are stripped from the hanging-wall, and the whole of the stone thereby saved and forwarded down the passes, which with the drives to the shaft have been cleaned and put in good working order. 'Although the lodes are small, the quality is 1 good, and with the occasional tind of small packet of specimens, will make operations profitable. There is plenty of quartz ti break down from the old stopes in each of the upper blocks that will preclude the necessity of sinking or even going to the bottom'level for a long time. The,, mine is in good working trim. WiiiEKAUBi G.M.O.—The following report by the mine manager was laid be'fore the directors, at their meeting ye3terdaj: -" Since my last week's report I have continued the drive north of [the cross-cut on tbe lower level 12 feet. At that distance the quartz had drawn in from JO to 5 feet in width. I put in a shot on what I supposed to be the hanging wall, and it broke out some good stone carrying gold. I have now cut into it 7 feet, and still showing golden stone, but no sign of the hanging wall. I believe it to be the main reef, and the one that I have been driving on is the footwall lode. On the 160 feet level the drive to the north of the winze is in 35 feet. The reef has drawn in smaller,, but still showing good golden stone. On the southern side the drive is in 38 feet. The reef has contracted but has the appearance of opening out again, and is showing good golden stone. In the leading stope going south in the 160 feet level the reef is 18 feet iu width, and showing some first rate golden, stone., Ihayebeen keeping the battery fully 1 employed, and to all appearanoes am likely to continue to keep it constantly crushing. The stone that I am sending to the.battery is turning out well.—Chas. fl. Wieson, mine manager."
