' Tho unusual quantity of Government ! telegraphic work since the close of tho session (in consequonce, it is supposed, of Abolition), together with some evening papera largely availing themselves of the five hundred words concession, have led to the wires on the main lines being clogged with work, and press and private messages alike are being delayed to a very unusual degree, especially during business hours, Major Mcßarnett died last night at his residence, Bull's, Eangifcikei. The supposed cause is cancer in the stomach. New Plymouth, Tuesday. The libel charge instituted by the Commissioner of Waste Lands against the Budget was withdrawn yesterday morning. The Budget last evening says, in writing the articles referred to, he had not the slightest intention of imputing (sic) to Mr Whitcombe, but the minutes were incorrectly entered by him or through his agency. Steps are being taken to present Mr Bolleston, late Superintendent, with a testimonial, as a mark of appreciation of his services as a public man. The Manchester Evening News statesAt a meeting on Wednesday evening of the Manchester Church Coiniit tee, at the offices, Mount Street (the Rev. Dr. Marshall in tho chair), a largo quantity of correspondence was read, including letters from Mr Gladstone, Hart Nelson, Bishop Abraham, tho Kev. Mr Maccolo, Canon Liddon, Canon Gregory, and the ltp.v. M. H. Noel, of Oxford. Mr Gladstone who wrote his reply ou a post-card) had been requested to deliver an address, " treating on the Catholic faith as opposed to the lliutolistic views and tendencies so strongly prevailing especially iu Manchester and surrounding towns," as, in the event of the right bon, gentleman doing so, "it might be fraught with great blessing for our teeming millions." Mr. Uladstone, dating his nv'ssive from Hawardcu, informed the Manchester Church Co did it tee that_ he was consiantiy in receipt of so many applications to deliver ecclesiastical addresses or assist at church celebrations " that he had come to the conclusion that he must piecesearily decline them all,"
