Three thousand fivo hundred persons attended tho sports at the Ellerslie Gardens, and nearly as many were at the cattle show, In the former, N. J..Grimes,'of Howiek, won the Birthday Handicap, running first at both distances. B. Ellis and F. Gow divided second and third prizes. The Ladies' Cup, for amateurs, 300 yds handicap, was won by George Eidings, with Thomas Henderson second. Tho sports were generally successful. At the cattle show, Lendrum took tho first prize for thoroughbred stallions with Pacific, Owen McGee second with Akeake, and Ferguson's Feve the third. Eoadsters: Young Eeformer was first. Draught stock: Owen McGee's Champion was the first. Pedigree shorthorned bulls': Morrin's .Robin Adair first; McLean's Colonel Tregunter second. Cow in milk : McLean's Lady Eleanor first. Grade shorthorn bulls : McLean's roan bull first. Pedigree heiferss E. and E. Mac Lean took the first and second prizes. Dairy cows : Robert .Neal first prize. Lincoln rams: Thomas Eussell first. Leicester rams: B. Mac Lean first. The quality of the exhibits was generally good. The Volunteer excursion to Mercer was well patronised and very successful The railway managed to accommodate the crowds well and without accident.
; (PEK PRESS AGENCY.) Arrived: The' John Mathews,' barque, from Boston, with notions; and 'Jane Stewart,' brig, from Melbourne. The holiday to-day was well kept. The Volunteers weut to Mercer. The Auckland Cattle Show was well attended, and a great success. The Ellerslie* Caledonian sporls were well attended. The Birthday Cup was won by Grimes, of Howiok; Gow,'2nd; Ellis, 3rd. Mr Sidings' Gainsborough won the Miners' Purse in a canter. • Three horses ran for the Coromandel Plate Handicap. Gainsborough, 1; Tauranga, 2; Mystery, 3. Maori Bace—Toby first. Efssbil, Thursday. . The whaling ship 'James Arnold'. arrived this morning. She has taken 220 barrels of sperm oil since leaving here in May .—The 'Magellan Cloud' has not commenced to discharge her oil yet, as it is probable she will proceed to Sydney and discharge there, the demand in Auckland being limited, and the oil is expected to rise through the loss of the Arctic fleet.—Arrived:' Maud,'' Policeman,' 'Ebenezer, and.
