MINING MATTERS.

MoANATAiABi.-A find which might be justly characterised as one of very considerable importance occurred yesterday in the Moanataiari Company's mine in the new low level which is being opened from the shaft at a depth of 80 feet beneath the Kuranui tunnel level. Becently, when referring to the operations which are being carried on from this level we adverted to the fact that tho two cross-outs, one of which is going in a north-westerly direction, and the other south-easterly, were in a fine channel of country which promised well for the existence of gold in any quartz which might be met, but it was not anticipated then that any lode would bo intersected before one of tho main reefs of tho mine, distant about 100 feet from the shaft, would bo reached. Tho find, therefore, which took place yesterday was in a'very great measure unexpected. It occurred in the north-wost cross-cut, a distance of 20 feet from tho shaft, and consisted of a fine looking quartz lode a foot thick, and showing gold, was cut through. It must notbeundorstood that thero have been any specimens found yet, but the show of gold is nevertheless strong and tangible, and it not only promises well for tho lode in which it has been found, but for all tho other reefs at this level. The company's crushing is progressing as usual, and is showing up. for an average quite equal to that of last fortnight.

• Golden Age Tbibute.—Delabunty and party, tributers of a section of the Golden Age mine, finished up a crushing of 10 tons of stone yesterday for a splendid yield of 94ozs 16dwts melted gold. fJnder the name of Quaelly's tribute this section has for a long lime been remarkable for the excellence of the returns produced from small parcols of crushing stuff. In fact, it is only on rare occasions that general crushings have taken placo at all, and the yields have beon more the result of specimen crushings than of general stuff. _ We have no doubt, under the now proprietary, that the section will prove as profitable in future as it has been in the past. Bed White and Blue Tribute.— Green and party, the tributers of the Bed White and Blue niino, deposited another parcel of 17ozs Mwts gold in the Bank of New Zealand yesterday, as the result of a cleaning up and retorting which took place at tho Moanataiari battery. Properly speaking, this parcel belonged to tho lot which was banked last Saturday, for it was obtained from some stuff which remained in the mill, and a general cleaning up of tho crushing. A temporary steppage has occurred, not on account of want of stuff, but because the shoot which conveys it from tho hill to the tramway required repairs. A fresh start will, however, be mado tomorrow.

Cube—Crushing for the Cure Company was commenced yesterday at the Tramway battery. Thero aro about 80 tons ready for the mill, derived from a variety of sources from tho various reefs and sections of tho mine. Tho return will, wo believe, on tho whole be a good one, although it is not expected that all the parcels will provo rich. Howovcr, sevoral of tho most important sections indicate good returns, and yesterday a fine parcel of about 40lbs of specimens came to hand from tho junction of the foot-wall lodo with tho Bed Queen lead or. There is likely to bo a considerable quantity of stuff available from this portion of

the mine, and the prospects so far are very promising. Tho No. 6 reef also, particularly at'its junction, contains rich prospects.. The various parcels will, we learn, be treated separately as far as possible, so that at tho close of the crushing the manager will bow exactly which have proved remunerative and which, if any, worthless. Old Weau Tbibuibs.—Tho crushing ■ for Childerhouse and party, tributers of Iho Old Whau mine, was not so extensive as was anticipated, and instead of 50 tons it has proved to bo only 33 tons. The parcel was finished last night, so far as crushing was concerned, but the retorting has been held over until to-day. Tho yield will amount to about lOCbzs gold. Garvey and party, tributers of another section, have about 40 tons ready for tho mill, and will start crushing as soon as opportunity offers. This parcel is also rich, and tho returns, with those already to hand, will soon place tho company in a position to pay another dividend, besides rewarding the tributers handsomely. Mabtiia,—The shareholders of tho Martha claim, adjoining tho Little Lizzie, Karaka, completed a small crushing yesterday at the Ooulabah battery, and obtained Gozs gold as tho result after it had been melted at the National Bank. Queen of BEAUTY.-Although thorc will not be so large a quantity of stuff treated for the Queen of Beauty Company this fortnight as last, tho yield will, wo believe, bo considerably greater, for tho show at the company's battery especially is an excellent ono. At tho Tramway battory, iu consequence of some repairs being necossary, the crushing was not resumed until midday on Tuesday, but yesterday tho show at this mill was quite as encouraging as at tho company's battery. _________
