MINING MATTERS.

'■■ Ajax (Tairuu).—- H a meeting of the directors of tbc Ajax Gold Mining Company, held on Saturday, at the Company's office, Mr Trcwriu, the company's mino manager, who had just arrived in town suffering from ill health, tendered his resignation and asked to be relieved. His resignation was accepted, and after a briof discussion Mr John Bcnney, formerly manager of tho Bright Smile Company, was appointed to fill tho vacancy. Pumping- Association.—During the past fortnight very fair progress has been made with the company's operations, particularly with the substitution of the 25-iuch lift for tho 18-inch .column in tho bottom portion of tho shaft,.. Tho regular measuring up for the fortnight will take place to-day, when the exact amount of progress will be known. KiBANfIAHiKB.—Tho trial crushing for tho Karangahake Company, which has boon sent to tho Tramway • battery, is not yet completed, but will no doubt bo finished up to-day in _ timo for the annual meeting which takes place this forenoon. A very largo amount of interest was evinced in tho crushing yesterday by those interested in the mine, as well as others who felt an interest in the district generally. Tho stuff was put through the five-head battery. It made a slight show, on tho plates, which throughout maintained a clean appearanco, with but little trace of tho seum which was complained of at the company's own mill. The result of Mr Harcourt's test lot and experiments will also be laid before tho meeting to-day_, and will bo likely to prove of considerable interest to the shareholders generally.

Alburnia Tribute.—A general crushing for A Hon and party, tributors of. a section of tho alburnia mine, was finished up yesterday at the Tramway battery, so far as stamping is concerned, but a largo amount of blanket washings has accumulated, the treatment of which will occupy a few days, and until these are finished no retortiug will take place. Tho yield will bo a handsome ono, and will be aided by the result from a parcel of picked stone which has accumulated since the previous crushing. : The party ; has had the parcel taken out expeditiously, and will derive a handsome profit from the return. .

Golden Age Tbibute.—Connor and party, tribute in a section of the old Beehive, mine, Waiotabi, crushed a small parcel of 18lbs of specimens for a return of 2ozs Bdwts : Waiotahi,—The usual monthly cleaning up and retorting for the Waiotahi Company took place yesterday, and the return mot expectations, although a considerable amount under the return of the preceding month. There were, it is estimated, 140 tons of stone treated, and the yield was 99ozs 13dwts gold. Eising Stab.—Ths shareholders of tho Bising Star claim finished up a small crushing of three tons of stone at the Moanataiari battery yesterday for a moderate yielcl of loz lOdwts gold.

: City or London.—The sinking of tho company's engine shaft was resumed yesterday, alter a dotentiou of about three weeks, and it is anticipated that continuous progress can now be mado tip to the time the depth requisite for a new level is attained. In tho drivo on No. 1 reef the men have not yet passed through the largo body of quartz formed by the junction of No. 1 and No, 4 reefs, so that there is nothing fresh to report from the company's workings. Ono of the partios who are tributing in tho upper sections of the claim finished up a crushing of 20 loads of stuff yesterday, and obtained 36ozs lidwts melted gold as tho result.

; Oid Whau Teibute.—A small crushing of about 13 tons of stuff was.completed at tho Tramway battery on Saturday, for. Childerhouso and party, tributors of a section of tho Old Whau mine. Retorting took place yesterday, resulting in a yield of 29ozs gold. ; .Cube.—lt is probable that a crushing for the Cure Company will be commenced this week, although there is not a very large quantity of stuff now on hand. The manager has recently had the men principally engaged prospecting, and one nice lode which, although small in size, is of rich .quality, and will help tho ensuing crushing materially. Indeed, the latter will, we understand, assume the form of a series of trial crushings from different portions of the mine. Euhanui Him.—The various tribute parties working sections of the Zuranui Hill' United Company's mine, have now accumulated in the aggregate a considerable quantity of crushing stuff, and the company's mill will be started to work next week, and will probably be kept steadily and fully employed for. upwards of a fortnight crushing the various parcels. The prospects of a good total return from tho mine for the present month are, wo believe, Iquite as good as wero those of last month.
