WATER SUPPLY ON THE KARAKA.

To tho Editor of the THAMES ADVERTISED. Sib,—Can you inform me why there has been no water in the stand-pipe at the corner of Sandes-street and JLarakaroad since Sunday morning? The inhabitants of this part of Shortland have been put to great inconvenience for some, time on account of the water, only being turned on from 6 till 8 a.m.,.and I spoke to his Worship the Mayor, and Mr Lorrie, who is in charge of the water supply,.on the the subject, but, instead of it being any better since then, we have had none at all, so that the inhabitants of this thiokly populated district have to travel down to Mary-street for water or go without. Some time since tho Council made a great stir about scarlet fever, and the opinions of all the medical men soemed to agree in one point, viz, cleanliness; if their opinions are correct, I would like to know how people are to keep their places clean without water. While speaking ..on the subject, Mr lorrie told me; that it took great pressure to send the water to the top of Sandes-street. No doubt it does; then why not lift that pipe whioh conveys tho water up tho hill and lay it up the Karaka fioad P Had this been done in the first place, many families would have taken the water; into their houses, as there are many of us that do not want tho water on the cheap; we would rather pay for it. Now, the cost of lifting and relaying that pipe would not exceed £5, and that would give us water all day long, and I am sure that expense would be.more than covered by the rates from those who took the water in; and, if it were not, it would be less expense than a fever hospital, whioh, J fear, will be needed if we

are kept longer without clean water. By inserting the above in your valuable columns, you will confer ajavour on the' district, and, perhaps, rouse those in power to a sense, of their duty.-rYouc obedient servant, vj : ; April 6. 'W. S. Gbeenvule,
