MINING MATTERS.

Waio-KAbaka Dbaiiuge.—ln consequence ef the gas having risen in the pumping shaft yesterday, the exact depth to which the water had been reduced could not be ascertained. Mr Daniel, the pilmau of the Association, made strenuous efforts to burn the gas out with but partial success, but it is anticipated that by this morning the gas will be all out. But although the exact measurement of the water was not ascertained, it is more than surmised that it is now down as low as the floor of the chamber of the No, 4 level. This means a reduction of 20 feet since the pumps were started, and as the. bhamber is a very large one, and the ground pretty opon at this level, and con* laini'ng therefore a large quantity of water, it will bo seen that the pumps, hare already accomplished a great deal. Between the JNo. 4 and No. 6 levels there is no open ground of any consequence, and the depth between the two levels is only 60 feet. ■ If the same good progress continues as that which has already been made, and nothing goes wrong with the machinery or pumps, it will lake less time than was reckoned upon to clear the water, not only out of the Bright Smile shaft and mine, but out of all the adjoining ones as well. ■ West Coast Teibute,—Weatkerall and party yesterday finished crushing 300lbs of picked stuff and specimens, from which they obtained a handsome

return of 1290zs 9dwtg. The result of a general crushing of from 8 to 10 tons will be to hand to-day, when the whole will be melted together,

(South Stafford.—l3oza 3dwts melted r old was banked yesterday as the result a crushing completed at the Hape Greek battery. . Candlelight.—The new shareholders of the Candlelight finished up a crushing of 13 tons of stone at the Moanataiari battery yesterday, and obtained as the result 49bZ8 gold.' : :
