In the current number ef the Saturday Advertiser is published a prize essay on the " futnre o£ New Zealand." There were tea competitors —three from the North Island and seven from the South. The judges (Messrs Chapman, E. B. Cargilf, and Professor Macgregor) were noanimousily of opinion that the production of Mr R. C. Fergusson, of DHnedin, was tho best; and Mr J. AsbmU; also of Dunedin,- is said to have taken " a highly honourable second plaoe."
