MINING MATTERS.

Golden Calf. — Eetorling for the Golden Calf Company took place at the Tramway battery-yesterday.- As we previously remarked, the cleaning up was not a complete one. In fact, the stoppage of the battery-being by a breakage of the fly-wheel of the engine, it was altogether unpremeditated, and consequently only the amalgam whioh had accumulated from the plates and berdans was cleaned up. The boxes were not opened at all, and there was a quantity of rough stuff, which, if treated, would have added largely to the result. As it was, a yiold of 94ozs retorted gold was obtained, There were 160 tons of stone put through, so that the grade of the ore is only moderate, but, with the facilities which now exist for. economic mining and cheap transit, such an average' leaves a profit, even if there was nothing more to be obtained from the stuff which remains to undergo second treatment. The gold was lodged in the Bank of New Zealand yesterday, and reduced to a bar weighing 91ozs lldwts, Point Kussell Tbibute.—Teasdale's crushing, was finished yesterday at the Moanataiari battery, after 13f tons of stone had been put through, and. the yield obtained amounts to 48ozs lldwts melted gold.' The return is very much better than.was expected by thetributers, especially while the stuff was going through the mill, for it did not make much show on the plates. Invebness.—A parcel of stuff has been crushed., for lapham and party, tributesof No. 2 seotion. of the Inverness mine. It yielded Bozs. 14dwts melted gold, a return which is not payable. Bed Queen.—The specimens from the Bed Queen mine which have accumulated since the last crushing for the company was' completed were crushed at the single-stamper battery of the Moanataiari mill, and the amalgam from th.em was retorted' yesterday, and produced 25ozs 18dwts gold; The amalgam from the general crushing at' too Waiot'ahi battery will be retorted to-day, and the gold, the product of the two parcels, will then be molted together. liitle'Lizzie.-A crushing of 17 tons has been treated at the Coulabah battery for Prescott and; parly, shareholders of the Little -Lizzie claim, Xaraka. The crushing did not- include specimens, but the return is nevertheless an. excellent one, amounting to 37ozs 15dwts gold, ' -Moa Tbibute.—A small parcel of 51bs of specimens was- treated yesterday for the tributers of the Moa mine. - The yiold was rich, amounting to 4ozs 9dwts gold. The stuff was treated at the Coulabah battery, Karaka.

Cube.—There was an improved showof gold in the Cure mine yesterday, especially in the run of gold which is being worked in the stopes of No. 5. reef. On the preceding day a sort of change was reported, which, in- the opinion of some, threatened to fihtout the gold, and some apprehensions were 'consequently entertained by those who were let into the seoret. But as the result shows there wero no real grounds for apprehension. The change alluded to did occur certainly, but.did not produce any alteration in the gold-bearing qualities of the reef? for yesterday, on looking beyond this threatening spot, it was found that the gold made as strongly as ever, and the change which produced such an amount of uncertainty passed off, without in any way influencing the reef. . A fine parcel, of 401bs of specimen's and 601bs of picked stuff was reported from the mine yesterday evening. :.-■. Moanataiabi.—-The fortnightly retorting for the Moanataiari Company will

take place to-day, and the return will in all probabilty be a little better than that of the previous fortnight, but the improvement during the present fortnight has not been of a marked -character. It is expected that by this evening there will be an opening made from the main drive on tfeldt's reef to the winze sunk from the ftedan old workings. The sound was so distinct last evening that the workings appeared to be very close together, and the manager started the men to drill a , hole througbysq as to introduce a current: of ] air, as well ascertain the exact I locality where the. meeting will be effected.

; Golden Cbown.—Operations in this mine have again ceased, and the final cleaning up and retorting will tako place to-day.' During the past two months the manager, has thoroughly prospected the old levels in hopes to find payable quartz in some of the blocks or reefs, but without success, and ho has therefore discharged the, few hands which had been working in the mine 'during that time. We aro not aware what further steps may be taken by the company, but it is probable that there will be no work of a general character started until such time as some of the low levels of the'adjoining mines extend.to the boundary. A plucky endeavour has been made to procure payable quartz in the levels already opened, and we regret that it has not been suocessfu'.

Manukau.-A triaj crushing from the low level of this mine (the extension of the Cure main level) will be treated in the early part of the next week. As our readers sre aware, this drive has now followed the No. 5 reef a long distance,, and through many, changes, but the prospects as a-whole'have not been so satisfactory as could be desired. There has not been much gold showing, but it is possible that the quartz may be'payable, and: the probability is that when stoping commences, after the south slide is reached, and they extend some short distance above the present level, there will be a better class of rock, found,-for there were some rich veins striking down from the foot-wall of the No. 3 reef in the upper level towards the hanging-wall of the present lode, and it is anticipated that when the junction of: those is found there will be some good payablerock discovered, Dixon's No. I.—As our readers may recollect, the company operations in their mine some time ago, and called for tenders from persons willing to take up tribute sections in the mine. The ■tender of Messrs Catran and party Was accepted, and. for''several months they have been pushing forward prospecting operations without results. Their first crushing was completed yestorday, and if succeeding crushings yield as well as that now finished the tributers will have' reason to congratulate themselves. There were 38 tons put through at the Old Whau battery .for a yield of SOozs gold. ■ Buck .Angel Tbibute.—A, crushing for Wingate's party of tributers in the Black Angel mine will be finished to-day .at;the Old Whau battery, and will in all likelihood yield a payable return. There have been 35 tons of stone treated.
