The informant, who was employed on board tho ' Transit,' trading between the Thames and Ohinemuri, was also a member of the Naval Brigade. On leaving his house on Monday morning, hjs uniform was all right, but when he returned in the evening, and wanted it for parade, he found that it had disappeared. It was subsequently ascertained that the prisoner had taken it and pawned it at Mr Bae's for 3s. The accused had nothing to say in his defence, and there being a previous conviction against' him, his' Worship ordered him to be imprisoned for threo months with hard labour.—Mr Bullen then made ah application under the 37th section of the j?awnbrokers' Act, which provided that it would be competent for his Worship to order the pawnbroker to return the jumper, with or without compensation.—His Worship considered this to'be one of-the risks which men who wentinto the.pawnbroking business had to accept, and ho , would order in this instance that the jumper be_rcstored to the owner without compensation.
