FLOODING OF THE LOW LEVEL OF THE CITY OF LONDON.
The anticipation that the stoppage of the ' Bright Smile pumps would result disastrously to the City of London and Queen of Beauty mines has proyed too correct in the case of the former, and the latter •must speedily follow. On Saturday morning the water was found to be rising at the • rate of one foot nine inches per diem.and as thishad continued for some days, the floor of the low level was covered at that time, while later om it was found to bo rising even more'rapidly, and a foot of water was soon perceptible, in the level. The manager had taken the precaution to secure as'far as possible the workings, so that they may not be damaged by the action of the water. It has now only tb : rise about eight feet to reach the Queen of. Beauty • level, which will certainly-be flooded in the course of the week,, unless the pumps are in the meantime .started. The securing and repairing of the Bright Smile shaft is npt yet completed. In fact there still remains a considerable amount of work to do in this direction, but it heed not interfere with the working of the pumps. 'Mr flicks, the manager of the City of London mine, proceeded to Auckland on Saturday night, it is understood, for the purpose of conferring with histiiteotors, with a vew to; making immediate arrangements regarding \ the drainage of the. mine; It is hoped that the City of London directors, being now so much interested in this drainage question, will take the initiative and convene a meeting.of those'interested, to consult as to the best steps to be adopted under the circumstances. We feel _ satisfied that they willbe met in a liberal'spiritby ■ the shareholders of the Queen, of Beauty and other: claims interested.' We regret to find that Mr flicks, before leaving for Auckland, considered it necessary to discharge all hands from the mine and to 1 suspend all operations, causing a consider- ". able addition to : the number of men I- thrown out of employment through the i unfortunate chain of circumstances which ', led to the stoppage of the pumps. v
