The debate on the Abolition Bill in tlio House of Representatives yesterday afternoon was tho most important— from a local point of view—that has yet occurred., The House wpa occupied with the consideration of the 15th clause of the Bill, which disposes of the goldfields revenue, aud an amendment wasmoved by Mi-O'Connor, the member, for the Bullet*, and accepted by the Government, which will have a most important and beneficial effect upon the goldfields generally, The original proposal of the Government was to distribute the goldfields revenue among tho local bodies (municipalities except ted) after tho costs of departments were deducted, But to obtain the £2 to £1 endowment under the Abolition Bill it would have been necessary to levy rates upon the lauds which are used for mining purposes, in addition to the special form of taxation now levied 'J upon the mining industry. This was setm to be unjust, and au understand* Ing was arrived at that the special tax upon mining, which is known as "goldsfields revenue," should be regarded as a " special rate," and for that rate the goldfielda should receive £2 p or every ,£1 raised.
