' (FBOil OUB OWN COBBEBPONDENT.) Nevbsvilie, Thursday. Ybsiebday durißg the early part of the •day we had-S'spell of fine weather, tho sun coming out very strong, which has a rtry material effe.ct ujon the bush, Towards however, our usual chronio weather appeared, and'the last twelve hour* have been no better than the rest ofthe;week.", i : . ■■>'~.
To-night we are to have a public meeting, to tako into consideration the question of the roads, and also to take an expression of the district's views upon the Abolition Bill now before tho House of .Representatives. Notice has.been given to the outside camps,,and they intend to send representatives, so _ that we are likely to have a fair decision upon the matters.
In the Gem the manager is now driving ujpon the largo lode that-wbs cut in the >weßt drive on Very little has been done so far upon it, inasmuch as a cutting at the entrance to the drive has had to' be made in order to make a paddock and form a tip. So far as can be seen, it has the same strike and underlie as the prospectors' N0.2 reef, and the stone in appearance is very similar. Several dishes were tried therefrom yesterday, and in each instance tho result was a good payable show.; • ' The ijax Company commonco to break out a ton of stono from the drive, which will be forwarded to Shortland. Now that the bags # have < arrived, no delay will ensue in its being sent on. I saw a splendid prospect yesterday from a pound or two of stone that had been burnt, and which bad just bcon broken from tho face.
Tho National Company havo gone through a fine lode about three feet wide, of a very kindly description, and the fac simile of what is to be seen in tho Nonpareil and Central Italy. It is heavily charged with mundic, but no gold has been seen. Tho main lode, according to the course it strikes, in the Ajax tunnel is fully 50 feet further ahead, and tho manager is energetically pushing forward with the tunnel in order to intersect it.
