Sunday. A great meoting was held last night at tho Mechanics' Institute, presided ovor by tho Mayor to discuss tho Government measures. The meeting was attended by 700 people, and tbo room was crowded. Many could not get in. The supporters of Abolition this session could with difficulty obtain a hearing till Mr Bees twice represented that it was adverso to their own interests not to givo both both sides an opportunity of expressing their views. Mr McMillan, of McArthur,'Sher'a and Co., proposed a resolution in favour of tho Government scliemc, and mado a speech, but was hooted and hissed off. Sandy Black, an old Provincialise to tho surpriso of: all, said ho roso to second tho resolution. But ho finished a quaint speech by wishing it to tho depths of tlio sea. Mr Keesing seconded the motion. Mr Bees proposed an amendment similar to that carried at Parnoll and Ncwmarkot, denouncing tho alteration of tho Constitution by an oxpiririg Parliament, and before tho voice of tho people was taken. In a speech of over an hour'a duration, Mr Bees pulled the bills to pieces unmercifully, arguing that they did not abolish Provincialism, but only the Superintendents and ; Provincial Councils, wliilo' they only obtained in placo of thorn nominees of tho Government, perhaps Luckie or Passmore. Tho speaker received tremendous applause all through. Messrs Boylan, Lusk, and Spoight (from the Thames), mado strong speeches urging delay in carrying out tho Abolition, which nearly all agreed was inovitablo. sooner or later. Mr Dargaville spoke in favour of the original resolution, but was frightfully hissed. On tho Chairman putting tho question, Mr Bces's amendment was carried almost unanimously, only four hands being held up on tho other sido. Tho meeting was tho most enthusiastic that has been held in Auckland for a long uhile. It concluded with three choers for Sir Goorgo Grey, hats being waved and sticks flourished.
