TAIRUA.
Within the past few days the public have been surprised by tho issuo of a Gazette joining tho Tairua district to this goldfield, and the announcement that a reef yiolding rich quartz had been discovered. It appears that a man named Neeres has been prospecting in the rough and densely-wooded district of Tairua for some years, and lately found a reef on a block called Pakirarahi. The Government were asked to take steps to have it joined to the goldfield, but they desired that a test should be made of the stone first, and in consequence 401bs of stone were brought to Grahamstown, which, at one of the batteries, yielded sozs of gold, Tho Government had purchased the whole of the land added to tho .goldfield, and amounting to about 100,000 acres, except this block on which the reef was found, but an arrangement was made with the native owners, and the whole dis trict added to the goldfield. Imme dialely upon the news becoming known, a number of persons started from the Thames and Ohinemuri. The pros pectors pegged out a thirty-acre lease, and very soon a number of leases were pegged all round. It is permissable, under the Mining Districts Act, to take up this extent of ground, and considerable dissatisfaction has been caused'by it, but these claims will be abandoned or contracted when the parties have to make the necessary payments. The prospects of the Tairua district are exceedingly encouraging. The mouth of the Tairua river, we may state, is almost exactly on. the opposite side of the peninsula from Shortland, but the spot where the gold has been found is on the range about nine miles south of Shortland.
