WHAKATIWAI. - THE NATIVE MEETING.
(from our own co-respondent.)
Friday, July 31,4 p.m. No movement whatever has been made towards the meeting since I last wrote, Only a few of the Ohinemuri natives are yet arrived. A special messenger has gone for some of them, but at the earliest they cannot be here before to-morrow night.
We know nothing here as to the whereabouts of Mr Mackay.
[Note.—l have read the letter of " Phcanix" in your journal of Tuesday last. Usually I have found the writers of such anonymous communications to be cowards; "Phcenix" is no exception What business is it of his whether my communication be long or short ? hfow does it concern him who I am ? Suppose I had been your correspondent atOhine-muri-which was never the case—what then ? Suppose I had been ever so friendly to Mr Mackay, what then ? Am I answerable to "Phoenix," or any other fool of his family ? Let the poor unfornate mind his own business; he will have more to do than he has ever yet been able to manage.]
