WEST END SCHOOL.

GALA AT KAWAROA PARK. Enjoyment for a very large number of children was provided to-day at Kawaroa Park, where the Gala Day of the West End School was held. Though the sky was not unclouded, the weather was on the whole very suitable for a romp in the open air. Ample amusements were provided for the children, while the adults who accompanied were tempted to buy from well-stocked stalls. A considerable sum should result for the school and the park committee, which divide the proceeds. A number of new swings were used for the first time and the groat attraction was the high glide. A slide from a height of 15# feet down an inclined chnte cost one penny, and business was very brisk. All manner of races were kept going from 11 o’clock until late in the afternoon with hardly a break, the large open lawns providing an excellent sports ground. All the arrangements for the day were carried out in an excellent manner, which was-a credit to the secretary (Mr. W. J. Bennett) and the numerous other workers. During the afternoon the Citizens’ Band provided music and afternoon tea was served in the Bungalow by the Kawaroa Ladies’ Committee, under the supervision of Mrs. Oliver. The doll-dressing competition resulted:—Class A, Eileen Smith, Mary Garcia (special prize) ; Class B, Greta Jenkinson, and Jean Smart (special). The doll’s set competition was won by Alan Woodham and a special prize was given to A. Scott. Those in charge of the stalls and sideshows were;— Fruit and Soft Drinks.—Mr. T. Petty. Plain Clothes.—Mrs. Evans, Misses Mynott and Anthony. Jumble and Toy.—Misses O’Brien, Bullard and Barnes. Lollies.—Mrs. Beal, Misses Boyde and Pitcaithly. Dolls.—Misses Jamison and Anthony. Vegetables.—Mrs. M. Johnpton. High Glide.—Mr. V. H. Beal. Coconut Shy.—Messrs. T. Hoskin and Scoble. Fish-pond.—Mr. Moore. Throwing the Dart.—Mr. Picard. The sports were conducted by a committee consisting of Messrs. J. Hamilton, R. J. Deare, W, H. Broome, E. H. Eowntree, D. P. Evans and J. S. S. Medley.
