FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. . « Nov. 15.—The heavy weather of tha past week was as severe , its ever experienced at this time of the year. Aa exceptionally strong gale accompanied by rain, with dashes of hail, thunder and lightning uevailed for several days with a monotonous consistency. Newly-shorn sheep tvouid of course be the chief ' sufferers, but fortunately not a great amount of headway has yet been made in this direction.
Mr. H. L. Northern, of New Ply mouth, who has purchased the general store here from Mr. W. Avery, arrived last week and has now taken over ‘the reins of management- being ably assisted by his sop Fred.' Mrs. Northern is expected to arrive next Saturday, While general regret will he felt at Mr. and' Mrs. 1 --Avery’s Vetirtment from business, it is pleasing to, know that they will not be lost to Awakino, haying taken up farming on the Valley Road.’ To Mr, and Mrs. Northern will be extended a cordial welcome to these parts,and success in business. A-whale was washed up near thp Mokau Heads during the storm last week and has naturally been f?re subject of considerable interest. The monster is 53 feet in length, and considerably “high.” A party of Maoris arc trying-out the blubber. The alarming news of the recent oeroplano accident was received here with profound regret, and much sympathy is felt for the relatives of the unfortunate ones. Sir. and Mrs. Bayly. of New Plymouth arc the guests at “Taumatamaira.”
