THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
TARANAKI TOUR,
.VISIT TO NEW PLYMOUTH,
POSTPONEMENT SUGGESTED. ■ His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Jellicoe) will make his first visit to Taranaki next week, accompanied by Lady Jellicoe, one A.D.C. and his private ‘ secretary (Captain Arthur R. W. Curtis). At Monday night’s meeting of the Now Plymouth Borough Council Captain Curtis wrote expressing'their Excellencies’ profound regret at the tragic accident resulting in the death of the Mayor (Mr. Clarke). Before the tragedy occurred a time-table had been submitted to and approved by their Excellencies for a tour of certain boroughs in tho North Island. It was proposed that their Excellencies should pay a visit to New Plymouth, arriving at 8.10 p.m. on November 24 and leaving at 1 p.m. on November 25. They hoped the council would not consider it advisable for the visit to be postponed, as they were not able to arrange it for another date in tho near future. If this was approved his Excellency would bo obliged if the council would daw up a programme for tho yisit, which'would enable their-Excellencies to meet the prominent citizens and also to view points of interest. Councillors generally were of opinion that, in view of tho town’s bereavement, neither tho cmincil nor the townspeople Would, bo able to give their Excellencies a welcome befitting tho importance of their position and of the town, and therefore it was decided to reply that, whilst New Plymouth would bo delighted to have the opportunity or welcoming their Excellencies and of expressing its loyalty to the King, the town and district generally would he deeply grateful if under tho distressing circumstances their Excellencies could see their way to postpone tho'ir visit for the present.
STRATFPRD ON SHOW DAY. The Alayor of Stratford (Air. J. W. Al’Millan) lias received information from tho Governor-General’o private secretary stating that Lord and Lady Jellicoe will visit Stratford on November 25 and pay a visit to the "show on people’s day, staying for an hour or so. His Worship tho Alayor has communicated with Captain Curtis, expressing pleasure at the forthcoming visit of their Excellencies and proposing that a civic welcome be tendered on the showgrounds.
