PRICE OF BUTTER.

PROTEST FROM RETAILERS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oot. 29. A conference of retail grocers from all parts of the Dominion to-day passed the following resolution regarding the price of butter: — “That this Dominion conference of retail grocers places on record its solemn but emphatic protest at the action of the Government in taking advantage of the retail trade by compelling it to handle the butter business at a margin of gross profit so far below working expenses; it pledges its members throughout the Dominion to continue to do ail in their power to get consideration given to the justice of their demands; it expresses itself as fully conscious of the power and strength of the' Government, and the hopelessness of, the case of any one section of traders making any attempt to combat its decrees; and finally, that this conference is of the opinion that at present costs to the retailers the mice of butter should not be lower than 2s 4d cash and 2s 6d booked.”
