“GIFTS WE ARE MAKING.”
ARE SUBSIDIES JUSTIFIEDOX TELEGRAPH OWN COREESPONDENT. WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. “I doubt whether these gifts we are making are quite justified,” said Mr. 0. Hn-wken (Egmont) referring to the butter and wheat subsidies, in the course of the debate on the'Death Duties Bill. He had heal'd it said that the working people were not as well off os they were some years ago, but ho had seen no figures that bore this out. The Post Office Savings Bank figures showed that the people had money which they could save. The totalisator returns showed that they had plenty to spend, and when the drink bill rose from four millions to six millions in cne year he doubled very much whether the gifts were justified'.
