BOXING.

CARPENTTER-LEVINSKY FIGHT. RUMOURS NOT CREDITED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received Oct. 16, 9.25 a.m.) NEW YORK, Got. 15. The New Jersey State Boxing Commission has decided tentatively to investigate the Carpentier-Levinsky fight to quiet rumours published in New York papers alleging that the bout waa faked. Carpentier indignantly denies the insinuation, and asks for a square deal. He pledges his honour as a soldier of Franco that ho fought to the best of his ability. Levinsky has also made a statement denying that he lay down. He said ho never recovered from the blow in the second round.

The New Jersey Boxing Commission believes that the fight, was fair, but is desirous of giving the authors of the insinuations an opportunity to submit evidence, if they have any. The New York Boxing Commission granted Carpentier a license to box in this State. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

The Taranaki Boxing Association, which has shown itself a live body, having already held three tournaments and staged four professional contests during its short existence, is holding aiiother two nights’ tournament in the Empire Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, November 10 and 11. The association is catering for amateurs hy holding provincial championship events in each of the six classes, and with the number of amateurs that arc now talcing on the sport throughout Taranaki, there should bo no lack of entries. If the talent can he unearthed there seems no reason why Taranaki as a province should not .again bo represented at the Dominion championship tournaments. However, this tournament will serve to give an idea of the prospective talent in the province, and from the showing made I)v those that have already appeared in public, there should he no lack of competitors. The secretary (Mr. Clarke) is endeavouring to got into touch with all amateurs and teachers of boxing in Taranaki, who should bear in mind that nominations close on October 27. For the second night, in addition to the finals, a professional contest for a purse of 120 sovs. will Ire staged between two well-known middle-weights, Laurie Cadman and Mike Dempsey. This is the most ambitious bout tlie association has yet arranged, and no doubt appreciation of their enterprise will be reflected in the attendance.
