Splendid acceptances were received last night for the North Taranaki Hunt Club’s race meeting, to be held at Now Plymouth next Thursday. The Woodvillo Jockey Club have added £6OOO to their credit balance in four years. Uhlans, like magj others sold at tha_
Karamu sale, has been a good bargain. The lop-eared bay cost 80 guineas at the dispersal sale, and has won over £2OOO since. A new race has found a place on the Wanganui Club’s spring programme. This event is called the Eclipse Stakes, run over nine furlongs under w.f.a. conditions. Big Push is very forward just now, and may be prominent at New Plymouth next Thursday. Thespian (Absurd —Beta), an inmate of Walter Raynor’s stable, has the reputation of being very fast. A number of alleged judges consider Lochella was above himself at Riccarton. As a matter of fact the son of Grafton Loch always strips on. the big side. Signysian looked a good bet in the Hunters’ Hurdles at Riccarton. and duly won, but the subsequent form shown by General Retain at the meeting proves that Signysian’s win was a lucky one. The North Taranaki Hunt Club’s meeting eventuates on Thursday next and promises to bo a first-class gathering. A few notes thereon will appear in Wednesday’s issue. The Avondale spring meeting, which is set down for decision next month, will eclipse any previous meeting hold by the club. 1 bear a number of southern owners intend patronising the fixture, The Wanganui spring meeting is held at much the same time, and tho riverside town will feel tho clash. While schooling Cheddar, recently an apprentice named Kendall has his collarbone broken through the gelding falling, while a couple of mornings later Cheddar again fell and gave his rider, Webby, a very bad fall, which will keep him out of the saddle at Taranaki next week. Last February I drew attention to the Taranaki Jockey Club’s programme which, contrary to the rules of racing, contained no race for apprentice riders. The North Taranaki Hunt Club have also infringed the rules, as they have omitted to make one of the principal races li miles (flat). Certainly the Hunters’ Flat is run over that distance but this event cannot bo called one of tho principal races on the programme. The rule to which I refer is Part VI., Rule 8, which reads: At least one Flat Race of not less than one and a quarter miles shall be included (such race to bo one of the principal races of the programme). After tho Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton Rangi Thompson (rider of Gunnaco) complained to_ tho stewards that M‘Sweeney (Coalition’s pilot) had interfered with his mount at the last jump. At the inquiry M'Sweeney stated that Gunnaco bored his mount, and the stewards accepted this version as correct and warned Thompson. While knowing nothing of this particular case, I may state, that M'Sweeney lias a bad habit of twisting his horse at the last jump, more particularly if anything threatens danger, and in support of this I may state that M'Sweeney was brought before the Wellington stewards when riding Coalition in tho Wellington Steeplechase, and was cautioned for interference at tho Inst fence. . This .rider’s handling of Coalition against Master Strowan at Wanganui in 1911), when racing for tho last jump, was very amateurish, if not suspicious. .
