MOTORISTS’ UNION.
SOUTH DESIRE SECESSION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 22. At the conference of the New Zealand Automobile Union to-day, it was decided that the Minister of Internal Affairs should, on account of the riarrowness of country roads, be asked to enforce the regulation prohibiting mo-tor-car owners or drivers from loading luggage or goods projecting beyond the running boards of cars. A remit from the Marlborough Automobile Association was passed, urging that every driver of a motor-car should have a certificate of competency before being allowed to drive a car on public roads. Letters were read from the Otago Motor Club and the Canterbury Automobile Association, stating that those bodies wished to resign from the union. Mr. Stuart Wilson (Wellington) moved that the resignations be accepted. Considerable discussion took place, during which it was urged that some means should bo devised to bring the South Island Motor Union into closer touch with the New Zealand Automobile Union. It was explained by Mr. Ansoll that the formation of the new union was not the result of jealousy between the North and South Islands. Mr. Stevenson moved an amendment that the resignations be hold over in the meantime, so that the two bodies concerned might consider the matter and indicate in what way they could assist the New Zealand Union. The amendment was carried. On the proposition of Mr. Wynyard (Auckland) it was decided that fees from affiliated associations should be as follows: Minimum, £lO, maximum £3O.
The question of whether the publication of the Year Book should be continued was referred to the incoming executive.
It was resolved: “That uniform warning signs to bo placed at the approaches to schools to be agreed upon, and made general throughout'the Dominion.” A remit from the AA'airarapa Association suggesting that the union press for uniformity in the design of signposts, was also carried. Officers were elected as follows; President, Dr. O. Prondergast Knight (Wellington); vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Henning (Auckland) and C. M. Banks '(Wellington) ; secretary and treasurer, Air. W.
