WAGES! OF PIPE PAYEES. Per Press Association. ROTORUA, July* 19. Men ' engaged laying the new water supply pipes in the Rotorua streets refused to resume work this morning. They receive 12s a day, and contend they are entitled to a bonus of 2s 8d in addition, as paid to others'doing similar work. They state the bonus was conceded, but not paid. Mr. Hill, resident officer, asked the men to resume work ' while' ho telegraphed The Tourist Department, which employs them. The men, who number about 40, declined. It is understood Mr. Hill has telegraphed the department.’

Later. The tourist Department has offered the striking water pipe layers an additional Is per day, to be retrospective to March 8, making a daily wage of 13s, and putting the men on with public works employees. The negotiations are continuing, but it is uncertain whether the men will accept.
