FBOM OUK OWN CORHES^OJJDENI. July 14.—That the drovers and shepherds’ ball at Mokau last" Friday night would'be something quite out of the ordinary was a foregone conclusion and so it proved to be. The weather, unfortunately, was most unfavourable, otherwise there would not have been standing room. As it was, the capacity of the hall was fully taxed, though the floor was not too crowded for enjoyable dancing. The excellent state of the floor and the pleasing sight in the sup-per-room, in fact the whole of tho arrangements -connected with the • ball bore abundant testimony to the careful preparations made by the point secretaries (Mrs. M‘Nair and Miss Barnes) and their 'band of willing assistants. Awalcino was awakened last Friday morning by tho stampede of 32 untamed horsesi from Mr. Hatley’s Paparaukoe ratich. They had been brought into tho township to bo drafted into suitable Jots for sale. There were some, likely looking youngsters among tho crowd, which was the centre of attraction for the remainder of tho dayb Mrs. Gavin was obliged to take her little daughter Jean to New Plymouth for treatment last Wednesday, a’large abscess having formed under tho left knee. Dr. Walker arranged . for her admission to hospital and the abscess having broken »Jean is making good progress, though she will be an inmate for a week or two yet.
