SCHOOL INSPECTORS.
FOUR NEW APPOINTMENTS
New arrangements to bettor the condition of school inspectors were announced by the Minister of Education, the Hon. C. J. Parr, in, 'Wellington on Saturday. It had been stated, bo said, that tbe inspectors were over-worked in that they had not only to travel about tho country examining schools, but bad also to make their reports and correct examination papers in the Christmas and other holidays. Cabinet had during the week authorised the appointment of four additional inspectors. Ho recognised that ’the inspectors as a rule did very good, work, and it was not' to the advantage of anyone that they should be’e'xpected to work on examination papers during their holidays. Tho new appointments would give some little relief in tilth way. Ahothor change was also being made. Inspectors had hitherto been compelled to live in the districts assigned to*them. This the Minister thought was a mistake, as it prevented the inspectors from meeting frequently and exchanging notes. There was no educational body whore frequent consultation was more necessary than the inspectorial body, especially in regard to tho grading of teachers. In future, inspectors would be allowed to live where they pleased. There was no advantage in an inspector being compelled to live in his district. Notwithstanding the financial pressure at present on the Treasury, concluded tho Minister, he hoped to have some moderate increase 'made in the inspectors’ salaries.
