NIUE ISLAND.
(Notes from n Correspondent.) | May B.—Things (except for communication with the outside world) are boom- ; mix hero at present. At time of ..writing we are to commence on a hospital scheme. It will bo known as tho “Liverpool Hospital,” as his Excellency, seeing die need for such a valuable institution in such an isolated locality, valiantly.-bombarded the lied Cross (1 believe) Society and obtained from them i a substantial subsidy towards the erec- | tion thereof. Of course you know that lie visited this land last year and what- ; ever ho may say a/xnit it is from perj sonal experience, though it was hut a j few hours.
1 On Leap Year Day (February 29, I 1920) wo wore surprised by a visit of tho Parliamentary party in the Mokoia. They spent only a day here, but ! still they should have learnt enough | in that short time to have reason to ' remember that under their jurisdiction. ; they- have an island as invaluable to i them almost as any they have. Tho Labour Party (extreme, I mean) wore 1 in their usual inquisitive mood, but to their surprise they found labour con- ’ ditions here better than couid bo expected. As a' matter of fact wages paid to labour hero is equal to that m New Zealand, perhaps belter, taking ■ everything into consideration. The 1 party in ""general appeared to. see the : necessity of linking us up with the ’ : civilised" world; and partly promised (I 1 : say partly, in case of dispute) us a
wireless installation. Naturally, there is a “hip, hip, hurrah,” amongst us all, but of course, like in, all things, wo must not count our chickens, etc.
