NOTES ON AUCKLAND RACING

(By “Historians.”) AUCKLAND, June 8

A heavy fog enveloped Ellerslie this morning, but lifted ax 11 o’clock, and the track was very heavy after Saturday’s rain. Although tho attendance was not up to the average, speculation was very brisk. All the acceptors went to the post for the Hunt Cup, the race being a good betting one, if we except Aiuira. Southland took tip the running at the word go, and Joel over tho first fence, the order past the stand being Southland, Koura and Totara Jack, the latter pulling hard. The same order was maintained up 'the hill, all jumping well. Coming down the hill Alaira ran through and was second at tho old water jump, which fence brought Southland and down. Alaira then took up the ruiimng from Totara Jack, tho latter heading Rae’s gelding coming down, the hill and getting over the last two fences well, won very easily.

A large field went to the post for the R-anl'uiTy Cup, several of the runners coming in for strong support. Head Sweet, from the outside, was quickestto' begin, and led Ngata, Tuipa, and Demoiselle over the first quarter, and much the same order was maintained into the straight, but onoe in a line for homo Robinson brought Royal Abbey through on the rails, and revelling in the mud, Hannon’s gelding won nicely, Demoiselle just beating Ngata. Tuipa again finished well up fourth, and Oliiti, ridden by. Gray, again let a large army of backers down.

Omahu was withdrawn from the Remuera Hurdles, several of the runners being evenly backed. Rckanui rushed to the front (it the stare and led by several lengths over the first jump. Hannon’s gelding increased his lead in the run up -tho straight and at tho jump opposite the stand was ton lengths in front of _ Kauri King and Gluotanus, Thrace being well back last. Rckanui continued to lead up the back, but three furlongs from home be commenced to tire and Kauri King was with him at the last fence, from which to home a great battle took place, Kauri King winning by a short Ipngth. Gluetanus finished better than anything in the race. Luperino was the only absentee from the Steeplechase field, which included Omahu, the' owner of which ran tho black for second money. Nothing lias ever stripped better for the race than Lpchella, and Mr. Christie took ■ the precaution of stationing a horseman at the dangerous fences in case this clovor jumper made a mistake. The performance of Lochella- was a meritorious one, as Fielding kept the gelding a , furlong from the leaders over most of the journey and was actually nine seconds behind the leaders at the old water jump (1-f- miles from home). The field was dispatched to a good start. Tenacious being first over tho initial jump. Ouco over, Peneton took charge, and led Tenacious, Garry Owen, Slow Coach, Gladful, Old Mungindi and No Surrender over the hill. Peneton and Garry Owen were together passing the stand, followed by Tenacious and Slow Coach, Omahu and Lochella being a long way back. Golden Glow refused at the water jump. There was little change in the positions going along the back, and ascending the Tiill the second time. Coming to the double opposn-e the stand Peneton and Garry Owen wero still together, jumping beautifully. Slow Coach, Old Mungindi, No Surrender and Gladful followed. Lochella, who was giving a magnificent exhibition of jumping, was closing up a little. The old water jump proved fatal to Peneton and Gladful, and Omahu and Garry Owen went on in front of Slow Coach, Old Mungindi and Tenacious. Lochella here commenced his run, which continued up tho hill the last time. Garry Oweiv who was going remarkably well, came down at the first jump on tho hill. Slow Coacli taking tho lead. Slow Coacli had a break of three lengths descending the hill the last time, but Lochella was only a length away at the next fence. The Southerner led over the last jump, but Slow Coach stuck to him, and half a, furlong from home Fielding was riding Lochella with hands and heels, eventually winning by two lengths, with Old Mungindi a hundred yards away.

The field for the King George Han-1 dicap was a largo one. From if good start Crowhurst and Ohinewairua were the early leaders, followed by Tamaroa. After going a furlong King Abbey took the load and led a bunched bold into the straight, Hyllus at this stage being almost last. A furlong from home Glen Canny shot out and won by half a length from Hyllus, which again put in a great run, Parisian Diamond just beating Arran and Gold Kip. Several of the runners for the Panmure Hurdles were well backed and one of them, Kereono, led Deviation over the first mile. Here the latter went to the front and was well clear at the last fence, but this one brought him down, and Keystone, heading Kereone off, won very easily over the last furlong. The racing concluded with-the Carbine Plate, in which Karaeo had a large following. The Taranaki gelding got away badly and was absolutely last of the strung-out field going up tho back stretch. Four furlongs from home he made a fine run and was a possibility opposite the Leger stand, but failed over the last bit, finishing just behind Sir Fanciful. Monopole won easily at the finish.
