FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT. April 26.—The annual meeting of St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Guild was held in tho Parish Hall last Wednesday afternoon, there being a good attendance. The report and balance sheet presented by tho secretary, Mrs. H. Horner, shows what a very successful vein' had just ended. The sum of £l2O Ids _Bd had been raised daring the year and they had a credit balance of £37 11s 7d at tho beginning of tho year. The payments included £IOO off the vicarage loan, £9 19s donation to car fund, £27 ,7s tor material for sowing, £3 18s 6d for advertising, other smaller expenses £1 2s, leaving a credit balance of £25 Os. 9d. Tho officers elected for (ho ensuing year are: President, Mrs. Stanton ; vice president, Mrs. Grossman ; secretary, Mrs. Horner ; treasurer, Miss Ilamerton. Air. Ll'ic Shaw was fa re welled by Air. Newton King’s staff on Wednesday. Mr. Outfield expressed their regret at losing Air. Shaw and presented .him with a. bhcqne on behalf of the staff. w;th their good wishes for his success in his now position at head office, and Air. Shaw responded. Air. AY. ]h Henderson succeeds Mr. Shaw as accountant here.
The Foresters’ “welcome homo” social last Thursday was a Inigo success. Thpro were 140 couples on the noor. Bro. Fawcett, P.D.G.it., welcomed all returned brothers and mentioned that 70 members of Court Inglewood Forest had left for the front, id of whom Iftul made tho supremo sacrifice. Pro’s. Geddcs and Henwond acted us Al.'sC. and Pro. Lindsay made a thoroughly capable secretary, having everything in capital order. Mrs. Howell catered for tne supper, which was done full justice to. Miss Curd and Alcssrs, Lamb, Stockman, and Humphrey provided the music in their usual faultless style. Air. T. Coruoy, formerly of Durham Road, who fell from some scaffolding in New Plymouth some little time ago is not progressing as favourably as his friends would wish. Some timo previously he had a fall off a log and injured his hack and it is thought that this is helping to retard his recovery. The little, daughter of Air. E. Broadmore, of Dudley Road had a narrow escape from drowning last week. Tho child was playing with her brother and by some means fell in tho crock unknown to him. Fortunately the mother came out to fetch her in and saw her foot in the water. AYhen she,,got her out she was unconscious, hut eventually she got her round before tho doctor’s 'arrival. These- people live six miles from the nearest telephone and it is when accidents like this happen that tho want of these facilities is felt most.
Dr. Nutting has left for a trip to America. He will probably be away about four months.
Special services wore bold in all the churches hero on Anzac Day, but there was no combined service as is usual. A special Anzac service was held in St. Andrew’s Church in the morning, which was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, members of the. Borough Council, the Fire Brigade, Scouts, and several returned soldiers. The Rev. Mr. Stanton delivered a most inspiring address which can hardly fail to leave its impression on those who were fortunate enough to We present. In the evening the Rev. Hensley preached to a crowded congregation in the Methodist
Church on the “Epic of Gallipoli,” and Mr. Perkins also preached appropriate sermons to largo congregations in tho Presbyterian Church at both services.
