Chief Justice Knox, of Australia, has been appointed a Privy Councillor.' Dr. J. F. Bennett, Blenheim, is spending a short holiday in New Plymouth. Mr. J. S. S. Medley, who for the past week has been confined to his bed as the result of a strained back caused by lifting benzine cases, is making good progress towards recovery. Mr. Julius Olson, A.11.A., the wellknown marine painter, and Mr. Kichqrd Jack, A.H.A., a painter of portraits, have been elected members of the Hoyal Academy. Mr. H. E. Longworth, physical instructor to the Canterbury schools, ifas been appointed chief physical instructor for New Zealand schools, with headquarters at AVcllington. The death occurred at Gisborne on Tuesday evening of Mr. John TownIcy, at 83 years of age. He was one of the most highly respected residents of tho East Coast and widely known as tho ‘‘Grand Old Man of Gisborne.” Prior to .settling in Gisborne in' 1873, he was in business in Napier. Ho was Mayor of Gisborne and chairman of tho local Harbour Board for a very lengthy period, but in recent years has not taken an active, part in local politics. Ho leaves a widow and grown-up family.
