WELLINGTON TRAM SMASH

ALLOCATION OF COMPENSATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 24. The Chief Justice this morning announced the details of the allocation of moneys paid by the City Council as compensation to relatives of those killed in the Pirie Street tram smash of January 3. The city solicitor explained than the circumstances did not indicate negligence on the pait of the corporation. The council, however, had decided to meet all claims which might possibly arise. It had paid into court in the case of Evans, the passenger who tried to assist the motorman, £1750 and costs ; in the cass of M'Ewen, £1125 and funeral expenses and costs; and in the case of Motorman Small, £IOOO and costs added. The council feels in this matter that it is not only meeting a possible legal liability, but it is also discharging a public duty.
