NOTES BY “HISTORICUS.” • A certain amount cf interest is being taken in the special meeting at Eliersho on Alcuday next, and some capital racing will be witnessed. Mangamalioe (7.4) is well handicapped in tae Prince of (Miles Cup. Taiamai and Alaioha mar also run prominently. Cynic (11.2) is remarkably well handicapped in a moderate lot engaged in tho Haraemai Hurdles. Aliss Aluriel, who stays well, has a nice impost (7.13) in the Paumai Nursery and should have a following. The "chasers” engaged in tho Kaircro fttcepieciniic arc very moderate, and tho hunter -Vo Nurreiider and Tenacious should acquit themselves well. Witn only 8.8. in the Saddle Rockfield should command a following m tho Renown Handicap. King Abbey, too, should claim support. Over 40 horses were accepted for in the Massey Handicap, and the race will be run in two divisions, each heat will ho worth £560. Mr. Kemball may bring a team of nine horses to the Bgraont winter meeting. By ins strong patronage of racing the Wairarapa owner deserves all the success which at present he is getting with his horses. Hie Alarlborougii Stakes (ono milo w.f.a.) for two-year-olds and upwards to he decided at -the special meeting at Riccartou ue'xt moutn is the longest race advertised in which two-year-olds may take 'part. Alany keen sportsmen do not approve of such a long course for a youngster, although the writer I'emembers Charlie Stuart beating tho “cream” of Australia in tho All Aged Stakes when that age, and he ran tho distance in the great time of Imin 38sec. With early important steeplechases in view, many owners have produced their horses earlier than usual. Coalition, Lochclla, ATirokino, Polthogue, and Nogam bo have all been in public at or since Easter. This season's two-year-olds are not up to the average of many' former years, and twice only (Electric Plato anti N.l. Challenge Stakes) during the season have two-year-olds defeated their older rivals early in the season. Alany alleged judges described Humbug as a. great youngster, but this scribe never held that opinion of Absurd’s son, which at his best is only a moderately’ good colt. Air. Al'Aleuimin took on a risk when he awarded Alarqueteur b.U in the Prince of Wales Cup (11 miles). Unfortunately Cox decided to take the chestnut to Awapuni, where after suffering a had defeat on the opening day he again failed by a small margin when carrying 8.0, in a good field on the second day. Certainly on this form tho Ellcrslic race looked a fair thing for the Hawora gelding. In winning a two-mile race on Saturday last, and then running a brilliant mare like Silver Link to a neck over 6 furlongs, and this under the maximum penalty, ' Amythas has proved beyond all doubt that lie is all his admirers claim—a champion. Tho South Island sportsman. Air. Chisholm, has sent two English-bred fillies to F, D. Jones to be trained. They’ claim Sunflower 11. and Fowlingpiece as their sires. Rockfickl was recently bought by a Waikato sportsman for £IOOO, which appears to bo a big figure for Aloniform’s son. Castellan, which ran third in the Axipvonticcs’ Plate at Awapuni, is described ns a promising sort. He is a full brother to that once good horse Fiery Cross.
