LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN.

* (By “Bushman.”) It is with great pleasure that I announce that the Taranaki Weekly Budget has.been appointed the official organ of the Taranaki Legion oi : Frontiersmen, Comrades throughout the Dominion will welcome this forward movement, as it will bo the means of disseminating nows of special interest to them. Tho journal chosen lias an exceptionally wide circulation and is eagerly read from cover to cover. Tho Taranaki (L) Squadron held their second annual conference at Okato on Thursday last, when a largo amount of important business was transacted. A full report of tho proceedings appears in another column. There is a movement afoot in New Plymouth to secure a meeting room lor Frontiersmen. Tho idea is to provide sleeping accommodation and a few little “extras” in tho shape of wash-basins, towels, and a gas-ring, so that visiting comrades will be spared the exasperating ordeal of searching tho town for a night’s lodgings, which frequently ends up in failure. As the scheme is at present only in embryo state I will have to defer giving full particulars until a future issue. Frontiersmen did a graceful, but well-deserved act at the Okato meeting. It is customary to elect a squadroncommander at the annual meeting and it was unanimously decided to re-elect Lieut.-Colonel Weston for tho “term of his natural life.” A benefit entertainment is being arranged in New Plymouth for the local Scout corps, and Frontiersmen arc taking a verv active interest in the matter. Lieut.-Colonel Weston, Chaplain Archdeacon Evans, Lieut. Goldsworthy, Scout-master Humphries and others are taking a keen interest, therefore success is assured. 1 am not at the present moment privileged to give full particulars of the prog: amine, but sub rosa the camp-lire scene is going to be unique. It is rather amusing to hoar some people make the remark that the “legion is dead.” It has not even been asleep. Many hundreds of Frontiersmen left our shores to take part in tho great wav. But we have to mourn tho loss of many good men and true, who sprang to” the aid of the British Empire tho moment war was declared in 1914. The spirit of tho legion thrives and tho great sacrifices which have been made demand that the legion and all that the legion stands for should live, and not die. The quost'Cii is frequently asked, “What is the aim and object of the League of Frontiersmen?” It is somewhat surprising that the question should be asked. Therefore, in next wecik’s notes 1 will endeavour to enlighten those who are unfamiliar witli the movement. There is also_ another item which might prove of interest; that is the origin of tho badge of the Legion of Frontiersmen.
